How to get your California crash report

California crash reports go only to parties with a proper interest. CHP reports cost $10 per 25 pages through the CHP 190 form or the CHP Crash Portal; city police sell their own. Here is how.

Who can get the report

California crash reports are confidential. Under Vehicle Code 20012 they are released only to parties with a proper interest:

  • The drivers, the parent of a minor driver, and a driver's guardian or authorized representative
  • Passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists involved, and anyone injured
  • The owners of vehicles or property damaged
  • People who may be held liable for the crash
  • Attorneys who declare under penalty of perjury that they represent one of these people
  • Insurers, with a valid claim or policy number

There is no redacted copy for the public. When you ask, you state your interest under penalty of perjury.

California crash report questions

Who can get a California crash report?

Only parties with a proper interest under Vehicle Code 20012, such as the drivers, passengers, injured people, vehicle and property owners, their attorneys and their insurers. There is no public copy.

How much does a California crash report cost, and how soon is it ready?

The CHP charges $10 per 25 pages. City department fees vary by agency, and some are free; waits run from a few days to 60 to 90 days, and Los Angeles and San Jose police ask you to wait at least 45 days.

What if my California report is not filed yet?

Ask the agency that took the report whether it is complete. For a CHP report, any CHP Area office can check and release it once it is.
