How to get your Montana crash report
Who can get the report
Montana Highway Patrol crash reports go only to entitled parties: the people and businesses named on the report, and insurers or attorneys acting for them with written permission. Other requests are denied.
Where to request it
For a crash the Montana Highway Patrol handled, fill in the Crash Release Form and mail it with the fee to the Highway Patrol in Helena, or email it to mhprecords@mt.gov. Questions go to 406-444-3278. The Highway Patrol does not hold photos from crashes that city or county agencies investigated.
City police departments keep their own reports:
- The Billings Police Department sells accident reports online by card, and in person or by mail with a notarized ID.
- The Helena Police Department sells its reports through CrashDocs.
