How to get your Virginia crash report

Virginia crash reports, including State Police reports, come from the Virginia DMV for $8, by mail, fax or in person. There is no online ordering. Here is how.

Who can get the report

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) releases the complete crash report to the people involved and their authorized representatives:

  • Drivers, passengers and injured people
  • Vehicle and property owners
  • Personal representatives, attorneys and insurers
  • Parents or guardians of an injured minor

Anyone else receives a partial, redacted report, and must give a valid explanation for the request. Virginia Code 46.2-379 governs the release.

Virginia crash report questions

Who can get a Virginia crash report?

The DMV releases the complete report to the people involved and their representatives, attorneys and insurers. Anyone else receives a redacted copy if they give a valid explanation.

How much does a Virginia crash report cost, and how soon is it ready?

The DMV charges $8 per report and refunds it if no report is found. It does not state a turnaround; guides report about 3 weeks by mail.

What if my Virginia report is not filed yet?

Ask the agency that responded to the crash whether the officer has submitted the report, then send your request to the DMV. The $8 is refunded if the DMV cannot find it.
