How to Get Your Illinois Crash Report

Illinois State Police sell reports for the crashes they handle for $5, and the Chicago Police Department sells its own for $6. Here is how to tell which you need and how to get it.

Who can get the report

Anyone can get a redacted copy. The Illinois State Police process crash report requests under the Freedom of Information Act, so the copy you receive has personal details removed.

Where to request it

It depends on which agency handled the crash:

  • Illinois State Police, mostly crashes on state routes: order through the State Police Crash Reports E-Pay site. Patrol Records can be reached at 217-785-0614.
  • Chicago Police Department: crashes reported within the past 2 weeks are online through the Chicago Police traffic crash report site. After that, ask Records Customer Service at 3510 S. Michigan Ave, 312-745-5130.
  • Other city police departments: crashes on city streets are held by the city's own police department.

What you need

  • The agency's crash report number
  • The name of a driver
  • The date and location of the crash
  • The county

Fees and timing

The Illinois State Police charge $5 per report plus a 2.35% card fee (at least $1), with up to 30 reports in one transaction. Reports take 10 or more business days. The Chicago Police Department charges $6 per report.

If the report is not filed yet

State Police reports take 10 or more business days to become available, so wait and try again. For a Chicago crash, the online site only covers the first 2 weeks after the crash is reported; for an older crash, call Records Customer Service.
